What are the
Server hardware requirements for running Citrix Presentation Server?
FileMaker Pro 8/8.5 has been tested and documented by
FileMaker to operate over
Citrix Presentation Server for Windows Server 2003. What
exactly does this mean?
This means that companies -- usually large organizations with many
individual FileMaker users -- can deploy
FileMaker Pro solutions using
Citrix Presentation Server for Windows
Server 2003 to
provide thin-client access from a variety of environments on Mac OS and
Windows platforms. It is no longer necessary for the application to be
installed on individual client desktops. It also means that
FileMaker will extend technical support to
users accessing FileMaker databases over
Citrix Presentation Server for Windows
Server 2003 in
the configurations documented in
Running FileMaker Pro 8 on Citrix
Presentation Server (PDF).
TOP
What about
FileMaker Server?
In the supported configurations, only
FileMaker Pro is installed on the Citrix
Presentation Server server. The FileMaker Server
products have been tested in configurations where
FileMaker Server serves multi-user shared databases to
FileMaker Pro applications being served
with Citrix Presentation Server.
FileMaker Server software is not to be
installed on the Citrix Presentation
Server server.
TOP
What
Citrix clients are supported?
See the system requirements in the document
Running FileMaker Pro 8 on Citrix
Presentation Server (PDF).
TOP
Can I use other
Citrix ICA clients — on UNIX, DOS, handheld
devices, etc.?
FileMaker has not tested these
clients. Technical support is provided only for configurations using the
clients listed in Running FileMaker Pro
8 on Citrix Presentation Server (PDF).
TOP
What about Mac OS X support
for Citrix ICA clients?
FileMaker has tested the ICA Client for Java
on the Mac OS X platform. Technical support is provided only for
configurations using the clients listed in
Running FileMaker Pro 8 on Citrix
Presentation Server (PDF).
TOP
What software do I need to
install on my desktop to be able to be a client of a
Citrix Presentation Server Server?
An Administrator has many options to deploy the
Citrix Presentation Server client software on each desktop machine. The
Citrix Independent Computing Architecture (ICA)
protocol is installed when Citrix
Presentation Server is
installed on the Server machine. TOP
I want to access my
FileMaker Server with a combination of both
Citrix ICA clients and regular clients, is this
possible?
Yes, this is possible up to maximum of 250 users on
FileMaker Server. TOP
Who should use
FileMaker Pro with
Citrix Presentation Server?
This product is for application administrators in IS/IT within
mid-to-large size organizations who are tasked to increase network
performance of applications over slow connections. TOP
What are the advantages of
deploying FileMaker applications using
Citrix Presentation Server?
The users of WAN or slow network connections generally see an
improvement in performance when accessing remote
FileMaker solutions over Citrix
Presentation Server
when compared to using FileMaker Pro clients for
remote access. Also, in general, deploying applications such as
FileMaker Pro over
Citrix Presentation Server gives organizations the advantage of centrally locating
applications. Applications need to only be installed once for many users.
Software application updaters may also be implemented centrally, greatly
reducing administration time and money. Customers also benefit knowing that
they will regularly receive the latest versions and updaters in order to
enjoy performance improvements. TOP
What are the differences
between Citrix Presentation Server and Windows
Server 2003
Terminal Services?
Citrix Presentation Server runs in conjunction with
Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services to deliver additional value, including a
wider variety of client platforms, and by providing additional capabilities
to improve bandwidth, provide enhanced security, load balancing, and more.
See the Citrix website for more
information on the benefits Presentation Server provides in this type of deployment.
TOP
What are the differences
between FileMaker Server and
Citrix Presentation Server?
Citrix Presentation Server and
FileMaker Server are two completely different products serving
completely different needs. Citrix
Presentation Server
allows an unlimited amount of clients to launch an application, such as
FileMaker Pro, on a central server.
FileMaker Server allows multiple (up to 250
concurrent users) users to access shared FileMaker
Pro databases. TOP
How many
FileMaker applications can be deployed per
Citrix Presentation Server?
This is determined by the number of users per CPU and not the number of
applications. Sites are required to have one license of
FileMaker Pro per client. See guidelines in
Running FileMaker Pro 8 on Citrix
Presentation Server (PDF).
TOP
Can users create
FileMaker applications in a
Citrix Presentation Server?
Yes, the thin client can be used to develop
FileMaker layouts, scripts, etc. as well as for deploying
FileMaker solutions; however, some
development functions may not work as expected. TOP
How can modifications be
made to a FileMaker Pro database that is
deployed over Citrix Presentation Server? Who is empowered
to make these modifications?
FileMaker Pro databases that are deployed
over Citrix Presentation Server should be hosted using
FileMaker Server. The developer can make changes
to the solution by closing the databases hosted on
FileMaker Server and modifying the files with a copy of
FileMaker Pro running on a standard
FileMaker Pro machine, or running as a thin
client (see the previous question). TOP
Can I still run
FileMaker Pro on my desktop if I use
Citrix Presentation Server?
Yes. TOP
Will
FileMaker provide support for
both FileMaker Pro and
Citrix Presentation Server?
Yes, if you are using the software on Citrix
Presentation Server within the guidelines documented in
Running FileMaker Pro 8 on Citrix
Presentation Server (PDF).
TOP
What are the cost
differences between running FileMaker Pro on a
desktop versus running on Citrix Presentation
Server?
In order to use FileMaker Pro via
Citrix Presentation Server, you must purchase a Volume
License Agreement (VLA) or a Site License Agreement (SLA). Retail packages
of FileMaker Pro cannot be used with
Citrix Presentation Server. A license for the
Citrix Presentation Server server is also required. Visit
the
Microsoft and Citrix
websites for more details. TOP
Do I need additional
licenses to deploy FileMaker Pro under
Citrix Presentation Server, if I currently have users
licensed under a VLA or SLA program?
Each individual user must be licensed for
FileMaker Pro. No additional licenses are required for users of the
FileMaker Pro desktop software if they are
already covered by the VLA or SLA programs. Citrix
Presentation Server thin-client technology is just another way in which a licensed
user can access and use FileMaker Pro software
under these programs; however, under these programs, additional license
units will be required to allow new users to access
FileMaker Pro from thin clients if they were not previously licensed to
use the desktop software. TOP
Can I buy and install
multiple retail copies of FileMaker Pro?
No. FileMaker requires that you order
licenses for FileMaker Pro under the
VLA or SLA
program. The retail license of FileMaker Pro
cannot be used with Citrix Presentation
Server
deployments. TOP
If I am only going to have a
maximum of ten users on my Citrix Presentation
Server at
any given time, but there will be a total of 50 users that will use
FileMaker Pro, how many
FileMaker Pro licenses do I need?
FileMaker does not permit concurrent use of
licenses. You’ll need to purchase 50 FileMaker
Pro licenses -- the same as you do with other applications that you might
run on Citrix Presentation Server. TOP
Do I need to purchase a
license for FileMaker Server to be able to use
Citrix Presentation Server?
If you are deploying multi-user databases, you need a license for
FileMaker Server; however, a single server can
support both traditional FileMaker Pro clients
as well as the FileMaker Pro client(s) being
served using Citrix Presentation Server. It is recommended
that FileMaker Server should be installed on a
separate, dedicated CPU. FileMaker Pro should be
installed on the same server as the Citrix
Presentation Server server software. TOP
Do I have to do anything
special when I create a FileMaker Pro solution
to run it in a Citrix Presentation Server environment?
Be sure to read Running FileMaker Pro
8 on Citrix Presentation Server (PDF).
Depending on your specific FileMaker Pro
solutions that are running over Citrix
Presentation Server,
you may need to make slight modifications: for example, plug-ins may not
work (a plug-in must be tested and supported by the plug-in developer).
There are no special changes required on the
FileMaker Server to support deployments with
Citrix Presentation Server. For details, please visit the
FileMaker
TechInfo Database and type "Citrix" in the
"Keyword" field to find detailed technical information.
TOP
How exactly can
FileMaker Server work with
Citrix Presentation Server? Please provide some typical
examples.
All shared, multi-user FileMaker Pro
databases should be hosted using FileMaker
Server. FileMaker Server should be installed on
a machine set to share databases using TCP/IP. The databases should be
installed on the same machine in the FileMaker
Server folder or a folder within the FileMaker
Server folder. Citrix Presentation Server should be set up
on a different machine and FileMaker Pro should
be installed on it set to use TCP/IP. Clients of the
Citrix Presentation Server can launch FileMaker Pro
and access the databases hosted by FileMaker
Server. TOP
Do I need to use
FileMaker Server to deploy a
FileMaker Pro application using
Citrix Presentation Server or can I deploy a standalone
FileMaker Pro application?
You can deploy standalone FileMaker Pro
applications on Citrix Presentation Server, but if you
want to deploy multi-user databases to Citrix
Presentation Server clients you must host those databases with
FileMaker Server. As documented in
Running FileMaker Pro 8 on Citrix
Presentation Server (PDF),
there are restrictions on FileMaker Pro
functions in this environment; for example, peer-to-peer hosting and web
publishing are not supported. TOP
What are the Server hardware
requirements for running Citrix Presentation
Server?
See the system requirements in the document
Running FileMaker Pro 8 on Citrix
Presentation Server (PDF).
