Project Scope:  A state government audit department visits commercial, residential, industrial and agricultural properties all over the state with the purpose of verifying property valuations.  The data is entered on a 8 1/2 x 11 card, photos are taken and later developed or printed to be placed with the data card, and calculations are made on the card once the auditor returns to his or her home or office.  The data is then mailed to the state's offices , where it is keyed into their main database.

There were several issues that needed to address in this project.  The first issue was that data had to be keyed in from hand-written forms, which resulted in both inefficiency and errors.  The second issue was that photos were sometimes misplaced or lost in transit or in storage.  Another issue was that calculations were all made by hand, also resulting in errors that had to later be collected.  And finally, all the data cards and photos had to be stored/archived, taking up valuable storage space.

Solution:  We put together a custom application designed to be used with a Tablet PC that allows the field auditor to enter data using screen handwriting or voice recognition.  The photos that were previously printed are now captured into the application and stored as part of the record so they cannot be lost or misplaced.  The calculations that were previously done by hand are now done automatically, thus eliminating calculation errors.  Lastly, the data is transmitted to directly the state's main database using a PHP interface, eliminating the possibility of re-keying errors while saving thousands of hours in labor time.
