Project Scope:  This company provides specialty services at events such as high school proms, concerts, football games, etc.  Previously, they were using hand-written forms for all ordering and payment processing, leading to long lines and poor service perceptions.  In addition, the ability to track customer buying patterns and trends after the event were virtually nil, as this data would have to be hand-entered into spreadsheets for analytical purposes.

Solution:  We developed an application that put the point-of-sale process onto a Palm-OS hand held device by Symbol Technologies.  By moving the point of sale to a handheld, the sales staff could establish impromptu gatherings of customers wherever they were needed.  The customer data is entered into the handheld on the spot, along with purchase and payment information.  If a credit or debit card is used for payment, the card is swiped through an attachment on the handheld device, and that data is transmitted securely via a wireless network to a workstation that process the credit card and sends the approval notice back to the handheld. 

The system can also generate a bar code to identify the customer for when he or she picking up product later in the process.  A bar code reader built into the handheld device facilitates this part of the process.

The bottom line here is improved customer service, a higher purchase rate among potential buyers, and much greater customer satisfaction.

While we realize that this is probably outside most traditional point-of-sale development (which we also have experience in), we wanted to illustrate what could be accomplished with some outside the box thinking.
