The iPad and Tablet PC represent the most versatile and powerful mobile computing option available today.  Larger than a smartphone but smaller and easier to handle than a laptop, notebook or netbook, these devices allow users to have an improved mobile computing experience.

iPad & FileMaker Go

The iPad provides an easy to use handheld platform that relies on touch similar to that of the iPhone.  With a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, it allows a near-desktop experience for FileMaker users while allowing them to work untethered virtually anywhere a wireless or Wi-fi connection is available.

FileMaker Go provides access to databases created with FileMaker Pro and hosted on FileMaker Server or FileMaker Pro -- ideal for mobile teams.  FileMaker Go can access databases on a Mac or PC using a local wireless network or over the Internet via Wi-Fi or 3G.  All changes are instantly updated in the hosted file. Some of FileMaker Go's features include:

• Save records as PDF and email as an attachment

• Save a copy of a database and email file

• Add, open, and email photos

• Import FileMaker Pro records via scripts

• Add, modify, or delete information

• Find, sort, and navigate through records

• Display data in familiar Form, Table, and List views

• View information in portals, tabs, or Web Viewers

• Search for information using Quick Find

• Connect to External SQL Data Sources (requires database to be hosted via FileMaker Server or FileMaker Pro)

Typical uses for FileMaker Go include:

• Conduct inventory checks while in the warehouse

• Generate sales orders at a customer site

• Track shipping and receiving activities

• Check in attendees onsite for an event

• Update project status while traveling

• Add research notes while in the field

• Evaluate employee performance while in the field

Tablet PCs

Running a specialized version of Windows 7, the tablet PC has the capacity to run any and all software that will work with Windows.  However, the real advantage of the Tablet PC comes in its ability to utilize alternative input sources such as handwriting and speech recognition to execute commands and for data entry, essentially enhancing the role of the traditional notebook PC. 

N-Sight has used FileMaker to custom design several applications for the Tablet PC.   Examples include applications used for property inspections, real estate appraisals, insurance claims processing, etc.  Anywhere large amounts of data need to be collected and/or analyzed in the field are ideal environments for the Tablet PC.
